Cheesy Chicken Alfredo Dip
Cheesy chicken Alfredo dip is sure to be a hit, whether you serve it on game day, at a casual get-together or for a party to celebrate a special occasion. This hot dip has it all: cheese, chicken, Italian seasonings and creamy Alfredo sauce flavor. Serve this tasty appetizer straight from the skillet alongside fresh or toasted baguette slices, with a crudite platter or alongside a selection of crackers.
Cheesy Chicken Alfredo Dip Ingredients
- Roux: Unsalted butter is melted and combined with flour to make a roux, which serves as a base to thicken the Alfredo sauce into a dippable consistency.
- Garlic: Freshly minced garlic adds its signature pungent flavor and aroma to the dip.
- Heavy cream: Heavy cream adds a rich flavor to the Alfredo dip. You could also use whole milk or half-and-half cream, but avoid low-fat or nonfat milk for this recipe.
- Cream cheese: An 8-ounce brick of plain cream cheese helps thicken the dip and adds a slightly tangy flavor.
- Seasonings: The cream cheese dip is seasoned with a combination of Italian seasoning, salt and black pepper. A tiny pinch of nutmeg enhances the dip with a subtle, sweet and nutty flavor.
- Mozzarella and Parmesan cheese: For the best flavor and meltability, shred your own cheeses. Opt for a block of hard mozzarella rather than soft fresh mozzarella.
- Shredded chicken: This is a great leftover chicken recipe, but you can also make it with store-bought rotisserie chicken—one of our favorite grocery store shortcuts.
- Parsley: Fresh chopped parsley is used as a garnish to add a pop of color and fresh herb flavor to the dip.
- Dippers: Serve the dip with a selection of dippable items, such as crostini, baguette slices, crackers and fresh vegetables like sliced bell peppers, carrot sticks, celery sticks and broccoli florets.
Directions
Step 1: Make the roux

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Melt the butter in a large cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add the flour and whisk to combine. Continue cooking until the mixture is smooth and the flour is golden brown, one to two minutes. Add the garlic and sauté until fragrant, 30 to 60 seconds. Slowly whisk in the heavy cream. Reduce the heat to medium-low.
Step 2: Add the remaining ingredients

Add the cream cheese, one small portion at a time, stirring to combine between additions until smooth.

Stir in the Italian seasoning, salt, pepper and nutmeg. Then, stir in 1 cup shredded mozzarella, the finely grated Parmesan and the shredded chicken.
Step 3: Bake the dip

Top with the remaining 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden and bubbly. Remove from the oven and let cool for 10 to 15 minutes.
Top with the chopped parsley, and serve in the skillet with crostini, crackers and fresh vegetables on the side for dipping.

Cheesy Chicken Alfredo Dip Variations
- Use store-bought Alfredo sauce: To simplify this recipe, skip the roux and heavy cream and use 1-1/2 cups store-bought Alfredo sauce instead. Bring the sauce to a simmer over medium-low heat, then stir in the cream cheese.
- Make it vegetarian: To make this into a vegetarian dip, skip the shredded chicken. For added protein, you could use a drained and rinsed can of cooked cannellini beans in place of the meat.
- Include a little heat: For added spiciness, stir in 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes with the rest of the seasonings.
- Add more toppings: Additional toppings you could add after baking the dip include crumbled bacon, chopped fresh basil, fresh grape or cherry tomatoes, or roasted red peppers.
