Hot dog toppings on a bagel order is bold. But it also works.

This year, I experienced a career high. I interviewed Elijah Wood about his upcoming live Super Bowl ad with Skittles. I managed to maintain my composure and not totally fangirl over him—I’m a professional, after all! The conversation was an absolute delight.

We talked about a lot of things, from Skittles, Lord of the Rings and his relationship with fans to the discontinued frozen pizza that we both mourn constantly. But there was something he told me that I could not stop thinking about: his go-to breakfast. It’s a combination of foods that I have never heard in the same sentence before.

What is Elijah Wood’s go-to breakfast?

Here’s that snippet of the interview:

TOH: What do you like to eat for breakfast?

EW: I go through phases. When I’m home and there’s a sense of routine, I tend to kind of stick with something for a while. There’s a bagel brand I love, called Royo bagels. Lately it’s been—and this is gonna sound funny—but I’ve been doing a bagel with hummus and sauerkraut.

Excuse me, sir, but what in Gondor’s name are you talking about? A bagel with hummus and sauerkraut? For breakfast? It was so specific, I knew I had to investigate it for myself.

How does Elijah Wood’s breakfast taste?

I went on a trek to Whole Foods to buy Royo bagels, the specific brand he mentions. There were only two flavor options at my store: cinnamon raisin and everything. I figured everything was the way to go for this experiment. I also grabbed a bag of ready-to-eat sauerkraut and some garlic hummus from the refrigerated section. Then it was time to get some shuteye and wait for morning to make my meal.

I toasted my bagel before spreading it with a thick layer of hummus, then piled it high with sauerkraut. And guess what? It tasted so good! As far as three-ingredient breakfasts go, this one is a winner. The depth of flavor from the everything bagel and garlic hummus is really nice and savory. And the sauerkraut provides a refreshingly tangy crunch.

I was thoroughly impressed and also kind of annoyed that I had never thought to put these ingredients together before. I love bagels, sauerkraut and hummus, so it seems like a no-brainer. I would eat this any time of day for a really satisfying meal. The only thing I would change is the bagel. The Royo bagels he prefers are very expensive, and since I do not have Lord of the Rings franchise money I will probably stick to a more budget-friendly brand in the future.

If you’re a savory breakfast fan, you need to try this out. I will be adding it to my regular rotation in the future—not just for breakfast, but for second breakfast as well. I genuinely can’t wait to try it with other bagel and hummus flavors. Thank you, Elijah Wood!
